Privacy Policy

This page says what GoHacks collects, why, and how to have it removed. It is written in plain English on purpose.

What do we collect?

Only two things come from you directly. If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address, and your first name if you give it. If you use the contact form, we store your name, email address and message.

Two more are collected automatically, the way almost every website does. Server logs record your IP address, browser, the page that sent you and the time of the visit, and we use them to keep the site running and to block abuse. Page statistics tell us which tutorials are read and for how long. They are counted in aggregate, and we don't use cross-site trackers.

The developer tools on this site run in your browser. What you paste into them, such as JSON, a token or a cron expression, is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.

What do we use it for?

  • Sending the newsletter you signed up for
  • Replying to your messages and fixing the bugs you report
  • Deciding which tutorials to write next
  • Keeping the site safe from spam and attacks

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. Your email address is never handed to advertisers.

What about cookies?

There are very few. Your browser's local storage remembers whether you picked dark or light mode. A small number of first-party cookies keep the site working and stop automated abuse. There are no advertising cookies and no tracking pixels. You can block cookies entirely and every tutorial will still load and read normally.

Who else handles the data?

We use outside companies for hosting, for sending email and for page statistics. They process data only on our instructions and may not use it for their own marketing.

Our tutorials link out often, mostly to official documentation, specifications and project repositories. Once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies.

What control do you have?

Every newsletter has a one-click unsubscribe link, and it takes effect straight away. You can also ask for a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, through the contact page. You don't have to live anywhere in particular to ask. We also honor the rights given by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What about children?

We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13, and if you think a child has sent us their details, tell us and we'll delete them.

What happens when this policy changes?

We update this page. If a change affects how we use the email addresses we already hold, subscribers hear about it in the newsletter before it takes effect.
