ASCII covers 0-127, and UTF-8 encodes those 128 characters as the same single bytes, which is why ASCII text is already valid UTF-8. 0-31 and 127 are control characters; the Ctrl shortcuts in a terminal send them (Ctrl+C is 3).

ASCII inside UTF-8

UTF-8 encodes the 128 ASCII characters as the same single bytes, which is why plain ASCII text is already valid UTF-8 and why UTF-8 took over the web without breaking older files. Anything above 127 is not ASCII, whatever an editor calls it.

Control characters you still meet

LF (10) ends lines on Unix and CR LF (13 10) on Windows and in HTTP headers. ESC (27) starts the colour codes in terminal output. NUL (0) ends C strings, which is why a stray null byte in input can truncate a value. Ctrl+C sends ETX (3) and Ctrl+D EOT (4), which a shell reads as end of input.

32 in decimal, 0x20 in hex.
What is the difference between \n and \r\n?
