Regions launched after March 2019 are opt-in: they must be enabled for the account (Account settings, or aws account enable-region) before anything can be created there, and IAM sessions need a regional STS endpoint to reach them. AWS adds regions every year; aws ec2 describe-regions --all-regions lists what your account can see.
About this tool
Method, assumptions, practical next steps, and limits.
Opt-in regions
Regions launched after March 2019 are disabled by default and have to be enabled per account before resources can be created there, and IAM roles need to use regional STS endpoints to work in them. AWS documents the list and process in specify which regions your account can use.
Picking a region
Latency to users, data residency rules, service availability (new services launch in us-east-1 first) and price all differ by region. us-east-1 also hosts global services such as IAM, CloudFront certificates and Route 53 control planes.
