Runs
at 03:00, on Monday to Friday
crontab line
0 3 * * 1-5 /usr/local/bin/backup.sh >> /var/log/cron-job.log 2>&1
Laravel scheduler
* * * * * cd /var/www/app && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1
Edit with crontab -e. Cron runs in the server's timezone, sends output by mail if not redirected, and does not run a job missed while the machine was off. For Laravel, one line runs the whole scheduler: * * * * * cd /var/www/app && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1
Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.
About this tool
Method, assumptions, practical next steps, and limits.
Three things cron does not do
It does not load your shell profile, so a command that works in a terminal fails under cron for want of PATH or environment variables; use absolute paths. It runs in the server's time zone. And it does not catch up: a job scheduled while the machine was off is skipped. The field syntax is documented in man 5 crontab.
One line for Laravel
Laravel defines schedules in code, so the server needs only one entry, which runs the scheduler every minute: * * * * * cd /var/www/app && php artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1. The scheduling docs cover withoutOverlapping() and onOneServer() for jobs that must not run twice.
