Input

Generate an .editorconfig

Output

.editorconfig

324 characters

Read natively by JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Vim 9.1 and Neovim 0.9+, and by VS Code through the EditorConfig extension. root = true stops the search for parent configs at this directory. It sets how editors write files; enforce the result in CI with your formatter (Pint, Prettier, Ruff, gofmt), which reads many of the same settings.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Why it is worth a file

Editors default to different indentation and line endings, so without a shared config every contributor's editor reformats the lines it touches and diffs fill with noise. EditorConfig is read natively by JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Vim 9.1 and Neovim, and by VS Code through an extension. The properties are listed at editorconfig.org.

Formatters still enforce

EditorConfig shapes what editors write; it does not check anything. Run your formatter (Pint, Prettier, Ruff, gofmt) in CI. Prettier reads several .editorconfig properties, so the two agree.

Frequently asked questions

What does root = true do?
It stops editors searching parent directories for more .editorconfig files, so settings outside the project cannot leak in.
Why keep trailing whitespace in Markdown?
Two trailing spaces at the end of a line are a line break in Markdown, so trimming them changes the rendered text.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
