Phones write the camera, the exact time and often the GPS position into every photo, and many sites publish the file as uploaded. The clean copy is re-drawn by the browser and re-encoded, which carries no metadata at all; on a server, exiftool -all= photo.jpg or Intervention Image's re-encode does the same. Orientation is applied before drawing, so the clean copy is the right way up.

Photos say where they were taken
Phones write GPS coordinates into every photo unless location access is off for the camera. A photo uploaded unchanged to a site that keeps the original file can reveal a home address. Many large platforms strip metadata on upload, but forums, CMSs and file hosts often do not. The format is defined by the CIPA Exif standard.
Strip it in your pipeline
Re-encoding images on upload (as Laravel apps do with Intervention Image or as Imgproxy does) drops metadata by default; exiftool -all= photo.jpg removes it in place.
