File Checksum Calculator

Compute the SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-384, SHA-1, MD5 and CRC32 of a file in the browser and verify a download against a published checksum.

Free · No sign-up · Your inputs stay in your browser

Input

Checksum a file

Output

Choose a file

The file is read into this tab's memory, so very large files (several GB) are better checked with sha256sum or shasum -a 256 in a terminal, which stream them.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Verifying a download

A checksum on the download page proves the file arrived intact, and if the checksum file is itself signed, as with Ubuntu's SHA256SUMS.gpg or Node.js's SHASUMS256.txt.asc, that it came from the publisher. A checksum fetched from the same server as the file proves only integrity: whoever can replace one can replace both.

The terminal equivalents

sha256sum file.iso on Linux, shasum -a 256 file.iso on macOS and Get-FileHash file.iso in PowerShell print the same hex digest. sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS checks every file listed.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read with the browser's File API and hashed in this tab. For multi-gigabyte files, a terminal command is faster because it streams the file.
Which checksum should I trust, MD5 or SHA-256?
SHA-256. MD5 and SHA-1 still detect accidental corruption, but a deliberately altered file can be made to match them.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
