Log Timestamp Converter

Paste log lines and see every Unix timestamp, ISO 8601 time and Nginx or Apache time rewritten in one time zone, with the rest of each line untouched.

Input

Convert timestamps inside log lines

Output

With readable times

209 characters

Rewrites Unix seconds and milliseconds from 2017 to 2039, ISO 8601 timestamps with a zone and Nginx/Apache [dd/Mon/yyyy:hh:mm:ss +zone] times into one zone, leaving the rest of each line alone. Timestamps without a zone are left untouched, because guessing their zone is how incident timelines go wrong. Log in UTC and convert when reading.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Incident timelines

An incident review pulls lines from an access log in UTC, an application log in epoch seconds, a JSON log in milliseconds and a vendor's status page in local time. Putting every time in one zone is the first step to ordering events correctly.

Log in UTC

Servers that log in local time produce ambiguous hours at daylight saving changes and confuse anyone in another zone. Log in UTC with an explicit Z or offset, as RFC 3339 timestamps do, and convert when reading.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some timestamps not converted?
Times with no zone or offset are left unchanged, since guessing the zone could put them hours out. Numbers outside 2017 to 2039 are also skipped to avoid converting ids.
Can it parse syslog dates such as Oct 1 09:00:01?
No. Classic syslog dates have no year and no zone; configure the logger to write RFC 3339 timestamps instead.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
