Input

Turn a title into a URL slug

Output

Slug

57 characters

Accents are folded to ASCII (é to e, Đ to d) and & becomes 'and'. Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as joiners, so prefer hyphens in URLs.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Hyphens, not underscores

Google's URL structure guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words, because an underscore can be read as joining them. Keep slugs short, lowercase and free of dates, so the URL survives the article being updated.

A slug is a promise

Once a URL is published, links, bookmarks and search results point at it. Store the slug rather than deriving it from the title on every save; otherwise fixing a typo in a headline moves the page. When a slug must change, send a 301 or 308 redirect from the old one.

Non-Latin titles

Accented Latin letters fold cleanly (é to e, Đ to d). Scripts such as Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic have no ASCII form here, so they drop out; for those sites, either keep the Unicode slug, which browsers display and servers percent-encode, or transliterate on the server.

Frequently asked questions

Should a slug contain stop words like 'a' and 'the'?
Keeping them is harmless and keeps the slug readable. Removing them shortens the URL; neither choice affects ranking in a way worth chasing.
What does Laravel's Str::slug() do differently?
Str::slug() transliterates with its own ASCII table and replaces @ with 'at'. For the common accented Latin characters both give the same result.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
