Reading the time zone database...

Names, not abbreviations

Store and configure zones by IANA name, such as America/Chicago, never by abbreviation or fixed offset. CST means Central Standard Time in North America, China Standard Time and Cuba Standard Time; a fixed offset such as -06:00 forgets daylight saving. The database is maintained by IANA as the tz database, updated several times a year as governments change rules.

Keep the database updated

Operating systems, language runtimes (Java, PHP's timezonedb) and databases each ship a copy. When a country changes its daylight saving rules at short notice, update all of them, or times near the change will be off by an hour.

Frequently asked questions

What time zone should a server use?
UTC. Convert to local time for display, using the user's IANA zone.
Why are there zones like America/Indiana/Indianapolis?
The database keeps separate entries for places whose history differs, so past timestamps convert correctly even if today's rules are the same.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
