UUID v5 Generator

Generate name-based UUIDs (version 5 with SHA-1 and version 3 with MD5) from a namespace and names, using the standard DNS, URL, OID and X.500 namespaces or your own.

Free · No sign-up · Your inputs stay in your browser

Input

Generate name-based UUIDs (v5 and v3)

Output

0 UUIDs

Namev5 (SHA-1)v3 (MD5)

A name-based UUID is the same every time for the same namespace and name (RFC 9562): v5 hashes them with SHA-1, v3 with MD5. Use it to derive a stable id from a natural key, such as a URL or an email, without a lookup table. Check: uuid.uuid5(uuid.NAMESPACE_DNS, 'python.org') in Python gives 886313e1-3b8a-5372-9b90-0c9aee199e5d. They are not secret: anyone with the name can compute the id.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Deterministic ids

The same namespace and name always produce the same UUID, on any machine and in any language, with no shared state. That makes v5 useful for deriving a stable id from a natural key (a URL, an email, an external system's id) and for idempotent imports where re-running must not create duplicates. Python's uuid.uuid5(uuid.NAMESPACE_DNS, 'python.org') gives 886313e1-3b8a-5372-9b90-0c9aee199e5d, which this tool reproduces. See RFC 9562.

Not secret, not random

Anyone who knows the namespace and the name can compute the UUID, so it reveals nothing more than the name does but also hides nothing. For random ids use v4 or v7.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use UUID v3 or v5?
v5. It uses SHA-1 instead of MD5; v3 exists for compatibility with systems that already use it.
Can I make my own namespace?
Yes. Generate one random UUID, keep it as your application's namespace constant, and derive all your name-based ids from it.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
