package.json / composer.json

"license": "MIT"

Do anything, keep the notice. The most used licence on GitHub. SPDX identifier: MIT, which goes in package.json's and composer.json's license field. Copyleft licences (GPL, AGPL, MPL) are long and must be copied verbatim from their official source, so they are not offered here. This is not legal advice: for a company's code, ask whoever owns its IP.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Choosing

MIT and ISC let anyone do anything with the code as long as the notice is kept; BSD 3-Clause adds that your name may not be used to promote derivatives; Apache 2.0 adds an explicit patent licence, which large companies often prefer. Copyleft licences such as GPL and MPL require derivatives to stay open. The SPDX licence list has the canonical texts and identifiers.

Not legal advice

Code written for an employer usually belongs to the employer, who decides its licence. When in doubt, ask whoever owns the IP.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if a repository has no licence?
Default copyright applies: others may view the code where it is published but have no permission to use, copy or modify it.
Can I change the licence later?
You can license new versions differently. Copies already released under the old licence keep it, and contributors' code may need their agreement.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
