Campaign URL

URL

https://example.com/pricing?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=october-2026-launch&utm_content=header-button

GA4 reads source, medium and campaign into its traffic-source reports; medium values it recognises (email, cpc, social, referral, affiliate) sort the visit into the right default channel. Never put UTMs on internal links: they start a new session and overwrite the real source. Strip them from canonical URLs; they are a tracking detail, not a different page.

Runs in this browser. Nothing you paste is sent to a server.

Consistency is the whole game

Analytics treats Email, email and e-mail as three sources and splits your reports. Agreeing on lowercase values and a short list of mediums (email, cpc, social, referral) keeps channels clean. GA4 sorts traffic into default channel groups by source and medium, as described in Google's URL builders help article.

Where not to use them

Never tag internal links: a click on a UTM link starts a new session and overwrites the visit's real source. Strip UTMs from canonical URLs too; they are tracking, not different content.

Frequently asked questions

Which UTM parameters are required?
utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_content distinguishes links in the same message, utm_term records a paid keyword and utm_id links to imported cost data.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
They create URL variants of the same page. A correct canonical tag tells search engines which URL to index, so the variants do not compete.
Is what I paste sent anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is sent to our server or stored.
